Apartment Living in Maryland

Want to live in the wealthiest state in America? Then plan to look for an apartment in Maryland, the richest state in the country with a median income slightly over $65,000 and the lowest state poverty rate in the nation. Named in honor of the queen of Charles I of England, Henrietta Maria, Maryland's nicknames are the "Free State" and the "Old Line State." This state is undeniably rich in history, beautiful landscapes and a resounding economy.

Maryland has seven forests and 40 state parks and the largest freshwater estuary in the world with its famous tidal wetlands of the Chesapeake Bay. The bay has the longest waterfronts of any state with its sandy dunes, seagrass, low marshlands and notorious reputation for fresh seafood, namely crabs. The Bay produces more seafood than any comparable body of water in the U.S.

Baltimore is the state's largest city by a wide margin with a population of over 600,000. Populations in the second and third largest cities of the state don't compare. The cities of Frederick and Gaithersburg only have a general public of approximately 58,000 each. For many, Washington D.C. is thought of as the state's second city of choice due to its close proximity. An interesting fact, Maryland actually gave up part of its territory to create the nation's capital.

Besides being a leader in the production of seafood and blue crabs, Maryland has the third largest number of biotechnology firms in the nation. The University of Maryland, John Hopkins University, Celera Genomics, the Food and Drug Administration and the National Institute of Standards and Technology are all located in Maryland offering apartment renters a nice choice of employment opportunities to choose from.

Baltimore Apartments

Baltimore, the largest city in Maryland with a population of 680,000, also has one of the largest ports in the nation. While one would think this port and hub would be the primary focus for the state's economy, in reality the source is research development along with education. Baltimore is home to Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland at Baltimore.

Like many cities across the nation, the downtown area is rebuilding and trying to attract new apartment dwellers with their revitalization program. The Inner Harbor is a local attraction with its stores, restaurants, antique district, aquariums and museums, all centrally located by the water. When looking for an apartment you'll want to be wary of the high crime rate and Baltimore's high cost of living. Expect to pay more for a nice, safe apartment. Apartment prices can range anywhere from $600 to $2000 depending on amenities.

Annapolis Apartments

With a population of nearly 40,000, Annapolis is famous for being Maryland's capital and the home to the nation's renowned U.S. Naval Academy. The city is big on spirit making it an ideal place to find an apartment. Said to be the "sailing capital of the world," this city by the water is rich in heritage. This 350-year-old city has a population of only 36,000 and is one of the state's top tourist destinations and a favorite among apartment seekers. Apartments start in the $700 range and grow from there.
